Sedation dentistry—what an interesting topic. First off, what does it mean, and is it for you? Well, it means that a person’s sedated while undergoing some dental process, such as having a cavity filled, for example. Sedated has a few different meanings, or at least one meaning with varying levels of intensity. You can be lightly sedated—that is, the dentist can make you feel dreamy and faraway and optimistic but you’re still basically all there, still basically with it—and you can be heavily or totally sedated, which means you’re not really conscious of what’s going on at the moment. Most people don’t like to be sedated at all, they like to feel they’re in control, but then again—most people don’t like paying a visit to the dentist either.

Sedation dentistry, is it for you? Should you even consider sedation dentistry before heading in? Is sedation dentistry dangerous? Can your local dentist perform sedation dentistry, or do you have to see a specialist? If you choose sedation dentistry, should you choose light sedation or heavy sedation? What are the aftereffects of sedation dentistry, how long will it take you to recover? Are there any other negative things about sedation dentistry that you should consider? Is sedation dentistry really that important to a patient? Is sedation dentistry really that helpful to either the patient or the dentist? If so, how is sedation dentistry helpful? If not, why does sedation dentistry exist in the first place?

The answer to these questions, for the most part, can only be answered by you, because you are the world’s first and foremost expert on your specific reactions to having dental work done. Dental work is a pretty overwhelming experience for many people, and for some it’s positively terrifying. Fear of dental work is an actual phobia, like fear of rats or heights. Therefore, when considering sedation dentistry of any intensity you should carefully ask yourself what you really need for your dental work to be done right and with as little misery (for you and your dentist) as possible.

Why include your dentist in that question? What reasons could a dentist possibly have for hoping that patient will choose sedation dentistry? You have to remember that dentistry is a job—it’s hard, the hours are long, the work is tedious. Dentists want to move through every visit as smoothly and quickly as possible. They have to be kind, of course, and if you’ve got a good relationship with them they probably want to be kind, but they can’t afford to treat every visit as if they’re a parent getting a child ready for bed.

If, when it comes to dental work, you feel you are that child, sedation dentistry is probably a good idea. That way, everything’s over quickly—there’s no dawdling over one last TV show, indecision over which set of pajamas to wear, resistance to brushing your teeth, fear of the dark. There’s no bone dust hovering above you as a drill shrieks in your brain and blood spatters your bib. It’s as if you’ve pointed a wand at the child and all of the above chores are done instantly, the child’s in bed peacefully sleeping.

Which doesn’t mean, of course, that fear of the dentist equals immaturity at all! All sorts of people have been terrified of dentists, from artists to generals to dentists themselves. Sedation dentistry is nothing to be ashamed of—even people who aren’t particularly afraid of things dental take advantage of it from time to time. The sedatives used aren’t quite the same as those used for other kinds of surgery, which means there’s less of a risk and much, much less expense involved—but anytime a person uses sedatives of any strength he runs the risk of harming himself. When it comes to sedation dentistry, it’s a very small risk, but you’ll want to talk to your dentist if you have any serious concerns.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Sometimes, people have completely healthy teeth, but the teeth are misshapen, discolored, crooked, or otherwise unattractive to look at. In addition, their placement in the mouth may have a negative effect on overall health and speech. Cosmetic dentistry is used to alter the appearance of the teeth, making them look straighter, brighter, and healthier.

Cosmetic dentistry can take on many forms and can fix virtually any problem with your teeth. Whether the teeth have large gaps in them, are discolored, or worn down, cosmetic dentistry can alter their appearance. Some of the more common types of cosmetic dentistry and the benefits they have on appearance and health include:

Crowns

Generally made of porcelain or resin, crowns cover the entire surface of the tooth, making it appear like a normal, healthy tooth. With a crown, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth, and a dental lab constructs the crown. The dentist places the crown with a special bond that holds it in place indefinitely.

Crowns have a number of benefits. They can replace teeth that have been damaged or worn down, and can give a new surface to a tooth that has a large filling or filling that is cracked or worn. Crowns match the color of the teeth, so they blend right in without looking unnatural.

Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer is a thin sheet of porcelain that is attached securely to the surface of the tooth. They can alter the tooth’s appearance completely, making smaller teeth look bigger and making chipped or broken teeth whole again.

Veneers are beneficial because unlike regular teeth, they never discolor; many people opt for veneers to give them the appearance of a white smile.

Implants

Dental implants are typically used to hold a missing tooth, dentures, or a bridge in place without having to rely on other teeth for support. This is an artificial tooth root inserted directly into the jaw by a special dentist.

Implants have a number of benefits. They are a good way to keep dentures in place, so chewing and speaking becomes easier for those who have dentures. They can be treated like regular teeth, and when taken care of will last a long time.

Braces

People with crooked teeth will find braces beneficial to them. An overcrowded mouth with crooked teeth not only takes its toll on the self-esteem, but it can also cause jaw and speech problems.

Braces can take the traditional form, or for less serious cases where teeth are not very badly crooked or out of place, invisible braces are beneficial. These are clear aligners you wear that work to move the teeth. Unlike regular braces, these can be removed to eat and even speak.

Whitening

With the popularity of whiter and brighter teeth, discolored teeth can take a toll on the self-esteem. Many people turn to cosmetic whitening to increase their self-esteem and confidence in their smile. This can include laser whitening, which only takes about an hour, or bleaching trays, which take a couple of weeks to see the full effect.

Cosmetic dentistry not only benefits a person’s oral health, but self esteem as well.

First impressions are important in all aspects of life and one of the first things people see and judge a person on when they meet them is their smile. In fact, studies conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) have shown that people with attractive smiles get better jobs, are held in higher regard, normally make a better impression and in many instances make more money. This knowledge has led millions of people to seek out that one thing that might make them more confident and sure of themselves: a great smile. Gaining a great smile is generally done through cosmetic dentistry.

Cosmetic dentistry is an ever-growing field and includes procedures such as porcelain veneers and the most requested: tooth whitening. Tooth-colored bonded resin fillings and bonded porcelain fillings and crowns on the back teeth could also fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry. There are many other cosmetic dentistry options available, but these are the most common ones, thus, the ones that we will cover.

Porcelain veneers or laminates are ultra-thin shells of ceramic material which are bonded directly to the front of the teeth. Under the direction of a skilled dentist and staff which includes a ceramist, porcelain veneers can create incredibly beautiful and natural smiles. This procedure can be an ideal choice for improving the appearance of the front teeth by masking discolorations, whitening teeth and/or reshaping a smile. If you suffer from any of these ailments, this type of cosmetic dentistry could be for you.

The advantages to having porcelain veneers bonded to your teeth are that they are beautiful and can make any average smile stand out as spectacular, they also add longevity and strength to your teeth. On the other hand, the disadvantages are cost because veneers can be very expensive, and the process requires that some minimal tooth structure be removed.

The other popular procedure, with similar effects, but much less cost, is tooth whitening or bleaching. Tooth whitening can be approached in a number of different ways. It simply depends on your budget and what type of results you desire.

The most cost effective method to tooth whitening is purchasing over-the-counter products. This method will normally produce acceptable results but can take many applications to get to the point that you want. Another method to tooth whitening is a system using trays made from impressions of your teeth. The trays are created in a dentist’s office and are used with one of several whitening or bleaching agents. More expensive methods that have more immediate results include in-office systems that usually employ a very bright light to enhance the speed and efficacy of the whitening agents.

Keep in mind that if you have dark colored or excessively grey teeth, whitening may not be an effective option for you. In addition, if you’ve had a high number of fillings, crowns or other dental procedures of this type on your teeth, then bleaching may not be the right option for you either. This is something that you will need to discuss with your dentist beforehand.

Lastly, colored resin that matches the color of your teeth is a material that can often be bonded to areas of the front teeth. This resin can be shaped and sculpted to repair fractures of the front teeth, close spaces and reshape teeth. Some advantages to this type of cosmetic dentistry are that it can usually be done in one visit, it’s conservative, it can look very nice, and it’s less expensive than some other options. A few disadvantages are that the life expectancy of this process is somewhat limited (usually five to seven years), and staining and discoloration occurs over time. Additionally, these bonds are much weaker than porcelain and resin bonding has esthetic limitations depending upon the size of the case.

In order to determine if cosmetic dentistry is right for you, the most important thing you can do is consult your dentist. Before having any cosmetic procedure done, it is imperative that you find a dentist that has the skill, experience and aesthetic eye to give you a beautiful smile. You will want to discuss any cosmetic dentistry options with them.

Many of us underestimate the things that our teeth do for us. Sure they allow us to chew our food and everyone likes to have a nice clean smile, but the mouth and provides much more vital services to the rest of our body and to our overall well-being.

It is true that the mouth’s primary function is to break down the foods that we eat into smaller pieces so that the food can be swallowed and more easily processed by the digestive system. But did you know that your mouth can be the first line of defense against harmful diseases and bacterial infections? Many health problems carry with them oral symptoms. For example, mouth sores, bleeding gums, decreased saliva, and even your teeth themselves can be connected to oral cancer, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory ailments and pre-mature low birth-weight babies.

Obviously, dental health goes beyond having a cosmetically appealing smile. Maintaining proper dental health can improve your overall health and even allow for early detection of serious health problems. Below are 5 important tips for great oral health:

Proper brushing and flossing

Your teeth are surprisingly strong. The teeth can exert between 30 to 50 pounds of pressure and the molars can exert more than 200 pounds of force! Your teeth provide you with a way to give your body the nutrients that you need to stay alive. Failure to care for your teeth properly can lead to bacterial infections, sensitivity, pain, and even tooth loss.

Proper brushing and flossing are imperative if you want to hold on to your teeth for the length of your life. You are probably aware of the benefits of brushing your teeth, but did you know that brushing too hard can cause more harm than good? A person who brushes with too much vigor can actually push the gum line down (which is irreversible) and cause the sensitive layers of the tooth to become exposed. Likewise causing damage to the gum line through improper flossing can lead to infections that can travel from the mouth to other parts of the body.

Avoid tobacco use

If you are looking for a fast way to cause serious harm to your dental health, start smoking or chewing tobacco. Those who use tobacco are going to have problems with their teeth, gums, breath and overall health. Tobacco use leads to periodontal disease (a severe bacterial infection that if left untreated can travel to other areas of your body and causes thousands of deaths a year), gum recession, bone loss, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, pus between the teeth, and gums and tooth loss. Loose or separating teeth and teeth that don’t fit together the way they used to are also indicators of smoking and periodontal disease. Even smoking less than half a pack a day will make you three times more susceptible to serious dental health related problems.

Good breath maintenance

Brush and scrape your tongue regularly. Rinse your mouth out with water after eating if you are unable to brush. Avoid using sugary minds or alcohol laden mouth washes as they can provide more harm than good to your teeth and gums. Sugarless gum triggers saliva production which is nature’s way of keeping your mouth healthy. Snacking on celery, carrots or apples can clean away other food left from the previous meal.

Regular dental check-ups

Perhaps the most important great dental health tip is to make and keep regular dental check-up appointments. Your dentist can provide preventative care and specialized instructions for you.

Healthy diet

Eating a balanced diet contributes to better gum health and better breath. Nutrients such as calcium can strengthen teeth and improve their longevity. Avoiding foods that are too hard, acidic, or sugary will prevent the acceleration of tooth damage and bacteria production.

There are plenty of types of cosmetic dentistry that can help you have a brighter, more beautiful smile. So, how do you know if cosmetic dentistry is for you?

Do you have misshapen or crooked teeth?

If your teeth are misshapen cosmetic dentistry could really do a lot for you. Veneers are a great choice for misshapen or crooked teeth. They are thin porcelain sheets that are bonded to the front of the tooth. Once on, they greatly transform the appearance of the teeth. Most often, veneers are used to correct small imperfections on the teeth. If you have slightly crooked teeth, a veneer can make them appear straighte, and in some cases can be used in place of braces. However, very crooked teeth and missing teeth are not candidates for veneers.

Are your teeth discolored?

If your teeth are not as white as you would like them to be, then cosmetic dentistry in the form of in office whitening is for you. Tooth whitening is perhaps the most common and most popular form of cosmetic dentistry. Thousands of people get their teeth whitened professionally by a dentist each year. So, while you can purchase whitening products at your local drugstore, cosmetic whitening from a dentist is more effective, better, faster, and safer. Not to mention, it will whiten up to 8 shades, as opposed to the 2 or 3 shades over the counter products whiten.

When it comes to ridding your teeth of discoloration, the type of whitening you get will depend on how deep your stains are. The most common types of whitening are bleaching trays, and laser whitening. Bleach trays are for slightly discolored teeth, yellow hues, not browns. Bleach trays are custom-fit trays made by the dentist then filled with a bleaching gel by you at home and worn for a specified period of time.

Laser whitening is best if you want faster results, or if you have deeper, more serious stains. Laser whitening takes about an hour. Your teeth are painted with a special gel, and then the dentist will shine a laser on them to whiten them. Some people opt to get veneers for permanent whitening, since they are resistant to staining, although that is an expensive option.

Do you have broken or missing teeth?

If you have broken or missing teeth cosmetic dentistry is for you. Dental implants are one option, and are enjoyed by many as they act, feel, and can be used just like a real tooth. Another option if your tooth is not missing completely, but is simply broken, or if it has been drilled out and filled, is a crown. A dental crown is made of resin or porcelain and is used to replace a tooth that is cracked, worn, or broken. A crown covers the entire visible area of the tooth. It helps restore functionality as well as looks.

Do you have large spaces or gaps in your teeth?

If you have large spaces or gaps, any number of the previously mentioned cosmetic dentistry techniques could help correct the problem. The point is, if you are embarrassed by your teeth, or find yourself smiling less because you are worried about your mouth, then cosmetic dentistry may be right for you. Talk to your dentist about your options and how cosmetic dentistry can help you have a happier life, brighter smile, and more confidence

Choosing the right dentist is just as important as brushing and flossing when it comes to your dental health. If you do not choose a dentist that is right for you, you will not be happy, and your oral health will suffer.

The following are some tips for how to choose a dentist:
What is the dentist’s philosophy for performing dentistry?

Knowing their philosophy about dentistry is important to determining if their philosophy matches your own. You will want to ask very specific questions such as: What determines your choice of putting in a crown rather than a filling? What standards do you have in regard to pulling a tooth? When do you decide to refer a patient to a specialist? These are all questions you will want answered as the answer is significant to the amount of time you are at the dentist, how much you spend for dental work, as well as how your teeth feel. Your dentist should tell you why and how they make their decisions. A good dentist will explain problems and options in a way that you understand so you can take part in making decisions about your care together. So, make sure you choose a dentist that will explain their choices, and help you make decisions too.

Have you been treated with respect and concern?

You are a paying customer. Yes your dentist went to dental school, and yes they probably make a lot of money, but you are a person. You’re not a tooth with a problem, you’re a person with teeth. So, make sure you are treated as such. A good dentist will ask you questions about how you feel, if you need anything, what would make you more comfortable, and how they can help you overcome any fears or concerns you may have.

Does the dentist ask for a complete medical history?
Your detailed medical history will be important for many reasons including determining allergies and possible drug interactions or intolerances. So, to choose a dentist, always start by finding one that is interested in the big picture. They should not just be concerned with this or that tooth that is irritating you. They should be concerned with your whole mouth. And your whole mouth means your overall health as well. So, if your dentist does not ask for your medical history at your initial exam look for another dentist.

Does the dentist check thoroughly for gum disease, decay, and correct bite?

At your initial exam and every cleaning thereafter, your dentist should be checking your mouth for gum disease, decay, and the correct bite. If your dentist does not do this, that means they are only looking to treat problems not prevent them, and prevention should be key with all dentists. So, make sure they use a eriodontal probe to probe for six points on each tooth to check for the depth of possible bone loss caused by gum disease. Have them use a dental pic to look for decay. Also, be sure they check the jaw and teeth relationship and the contact points in your bite are checked by the dentist at each visit. Why? This is important because over time, changes in your bite can cause stress and cracked teeth, which is never a good thing.

Do you like your dentist?
Part of choosing a dentist is choosing one that you like. So, meet them before you go in for work. Determine if you would be comfortable having them in close quarters with you for an hour or two at a time. If the answer is no, find a new dentist.

The type of dentistry where the primary focus is the modification of the appearance of a patients teeth and surrounding structures is known as cosmetic dentistry. While this type of dentistry does focus primarily on the appearance of the patient it is also done with the prevention and treatment of teeth, gums and all oral structures in mind. Most patients naturally pursue this type of dentistry to improve their appearance. But, how do you know if this type of dentistry is for you?

The main focus of this type of dentistry is simply to improve someone’s smile. Cosmetic dentist will consider the appearance of individual teeth as well as the overall look of a patient’s smile. This field has become the fastest growing segment of dentistry as many patients who just a few years ago would have had to remain unhappy about their appearance now have the option to change it. So, to determine if it is for you, ask yourself if you would like a change in the appearance of your smile. If you answer yes, it is time to look at the benefits and options, and talk to your dentist.

This change in dentistry has been primarily brought about with a change in technology. In the past dental fillings and other tooth restorations were veneered with porcelain with gold, amalgam and other metals being underneath. Today materials that more closely mimic the appearance of a natural tooth can be used in dental restorations. These fillings or other devices are made entirely of porcelain or other composite materials.

These newer more natural looking materials give the wearer the effect of having nearly perfect teeth. The teeth colored materials are bonded using resin adhesives to the underlying tooth structure. While many dentists specialize in only cosmetic dentistry, many general dentists are expanding their practice to include cosmetic dentistry procedures.

There are many different options that are commonplace in cosmetic dentistry. Some of these options are-

Whitening also known as tooth bleaching. This is perhaps the most commonly prescribed and used cosmetic dental procedure. While grocery and drug stores offer many off the shelf options for teeth whitening, dentist supervised treatments remain the recommended procedure for lightening discolored teeth. This type of tooth bleaching has also been shown in several research studies to show the most significant results in achieving the desired whiteness.

Enamel shaping involves removing part of the contouring enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth or teeth. It can be used to treat or correct a very small chip. It is important to note that the removed enamel is irreplaceable. This procedure is also known as enameloplasty, odontoplasty, recontouring, reshaping, slenderizing and stripping.

Bonding is used to improve the appearance of chipped or cracked teeth. This is usually the best option when teeth have been moderately to severely damaged. This process involves using enamel like dental composite material that is applied to the tooth’s surface. It is then sculpted into shape, hardened and then polished. Users of this type of process report very high satisfaction rates with this procedure.

Veneers are an increasingly popular procedure. Using this method involves having ultra thin, custom made laminates bonded directly to the teeth. This is a very good option for disguising discolored teeth that may not have responded well to whitening procedures. Veneers are also used to close gaps in teeth.

Many patients are left to consider if cosmetic dentistry is for them. By looking carefully at their smile patients can consider if there is a need for improvement. Cosmetic dentistry can also help correct abnormal gum problems or out of date dental treatment. Many people feel self conscious about their smiles and could benefit greatly in improved self esteem by taking advantage of cosmetic dentistry.

After considering the options and consulting with their dentist if the patient feel cosmetic dentistry is for them then the options for a better and brighter smile await!

If your smile doesn’t really reflect your optimistic character and doesn’t represent you, this means that you must do something about those crooked teeth. One of the latest appearances on the market that can offer you a solution is cosmetic dentistry.

One of its products is represented by veneers:

You may have heard the term “veneer” in conjunction with wood working. This resemblance is not only in terms but also in technique because the process for cosmetic dental applications is much the same: for each individual tooth very thin covers are custom created. They go to the front side of the tooth. Veneering is an option to bonding and shaping. Since veneers appeared on the market, it came famous and very popular. One of its strong qualities is its thickness: they are very very thin and somewhat resistant to staining.

You may think that such a product is very expensive. Well, you are right..it is expensive. But because of its popularity and for this product to be available to all, there are two versions:

- Porcelain or “indirect” veneers are handcrafted in a laboratory especially to fit your teeth. They are expensive but are said to last from 10 to 15 years.
- Composite or “direct” veneers are enamel which is bonded directly to the tooth is significantly less expensive but their “shelf life” is only 5 to 7 years.

If you have almost translucent they can literally breathe new life into damaged or discolored teeth.

Other methods that you surly need in your search for the perfect smile are bleaching and teeth whitening strips.

Bleaching is one of the most important esthetic operations because white teeth are very expressive but also very hard to obtain and to maintain.

Before the bleaching operation begins the gums must be protected because they contain very sensitive tissue. For this a rubber shield or a gel is necessary. Then bleaching material is applied sometimes using a laser light to enhance the procedure. This process may require several visits to the dental office.

Of course if you don’t have enough time to go to the dentist an alternative exists: you can make bleaching in your own home, of course not before you talk with your dentist first. The bleaching kit is usually obtained from your dentist and it contains an agent named carbamide peroxide solution. It usually comes as a gel and placed in a mouth guard. The frequency and length of treatment will vary from person to person depending on the amount and intensity of whitening you desire. Of course this also must be discussed with your dentist before proceeding. This procedure is mostly secure. Side effects are very rare and are represented by soft tissue irritation.

Teeth whitening strips represents the coolest method on the market

These are probably the most convenient advancement in dental care in decades taking the concept of tooth bleaching to an entire new level of speed and convenience.

If you’re every day diet and lifestyle contains tobacco, tea, red wine, colored juices, curry, soy and soft drinks you certainly will use teeth whitening strips. The whitening strips contain hydrogen peroxide which is embedded in transparent material that fits over the teeth. Almost totally undetectable when worn, the peroxide goes to work as soon as they are activated by the moisture in your mouth. (Another good reason to avoid dry mouth!). There are several brand names on the market and all work pretty much the same. They are applied over the teeth and worn for 30 minutes twice a day for 21 days, or you may select the type that can be worn overnight whitening the teeth while you are sleeping.

The results from the teeth whitening strips are absolutely incredible and you would do well to give them a try.
